The Cotton Belt Rail Depot is located in downtown Saint Louis, MO,USA. The Cotton Belt Depot was built in 1911 and was in service for many years, and then just left alone for several decades. I have photographed the Cotton Belt Depot for the last several years, with the permission of its current owners. It is a great location for a model shoot.
For my recent shoot, I wanted to use the Depot as a backdrop for a models portfolio. The upper floors of the depot are lined with interesting, ever changing graffiti, but the light can be very challenging. I decided to utilize a flat panel flash.
The panel flash puts out a great deal of soft light with little or no shadows. For Infrared it is a perfect match. The only challenge with the panel flash is that it has just one setting, on. The camera was white balanced using the concrete as a reference and images were captured in RAW.
The images were processed using Canons DPP; a second White Balance was done once again using concrete as a reference.
