Product Description

Have us convert your camera to a dedicated ultraviolet only camera. We replace the internal hot mirror filter with our high quality custom manufactured UV band pass filter. After conversion your camera will have much higher UV sensitivity and you will no longer need any UV filters in front of the lens making it easier to compose and focus UV photographs. Another benefit is the ability to shoot using wide angle lenses without the problems normally associated with external UV interference filters.

Great for skin damage analysis, eye wear protection testing, dental, forensic and many other uses.

Our internal UV only filters are the best in the world, are hard coated using magnetron sputtering technology on fused silica substrate and have the best UV transmission and out of band blocking available anywhere. This coating process is very expensive but we managed to keep costs as low as possible by optimizing the fabrication process and lot volume.

Our default calibration lens for UV only Canon DSLRs is the Coastal Optics 60mm UV-Vis-IR lens but you can use any other lens that can pass readily UV light through the lens.

Cameras with Nikon electronic shutter monitor circuitry will not fog your images as the UV only filter is right on the sensor and blocks IR light.

* Nikon D40 – Will not custom white balance after conversion with ultraviolet filters. Nikon D60, D90, D300, D300s, D700, D3000, D5000, D7000 – These models are random, some will white balance UV filters some not at all.

With the above models you can use Nikon Capture NX/2 to set the custom white balance as long as you shoot RAW files.

Our 1 year warranty is included on conversion services and installed UV filters.

After you place your order you will receive an email with instructions on how to send us your camera.

How To Use Your UV Converted Camera

Stock digital cameras are sensitive to a wide light wavelength range from 400nm to 700nm but after UV conversion your camera will only be sensitive to 350-400nm. As you can see this is a much smaller fraction of total light sensitivity of a stock camera. Also, UV light output from the sun through Earth’s ozone layer is significantly reduced and so only makes it down to earth in small amounts. This is actually a good thing or else we’d all suffer severe burns anytime venturing outside.

Along with the above, most lenses are made of glass that doesn’t transmit UV very efficiently and most are even coated specifically to block UV. This makes most lenses useless for UV photography as all you’d get is a black, unexposed frame. You must either use a specialty UV lens like  the Coastal Optics 60mm UV-Vis-IR lens or the Coastal Optics 105mm UV-Vis lens to get maximum light through the lens and onto your sensor. Unfortunately these lenses are beyond reach for most due to their high price tags.

Fortunately, there are some regular lenses that do work for UV photography, provided you make some adjustments. We recommend using a prime lens with the least possible glass elements and coatings, we’ve been successful with the Canon 50mm prime lens. You still need to make adjustments, shoot at higher ISO, wide aperture and in strong, direct sunlight when the UV index is highest (10am to 4pm).

For indoor UV photography or when there isn’t much sunlight available then you must use a UV light source, regular camera flash units usually have a UV block coating applied and don’t work for UV photography.

Custom white balance is critical for proper looking images (even if converting to black & white in camera or in post production) – Always set and use a custom white balance when shooting IR and UV light.

There are other resources on the web about UV photography, with lots of great info, including some about modifying standard lenses for better UV sensitivity.

Here is a good start of the web resources.
