Introduction to Infrared Photography Workshop

Location: St. Louis, MO

Workshop Dates:   08/08/23 – 08/10/23

If you are like most Photographers, having an Infrared camera converted offers a new exciting opportunity to expand your artistic abilities.  However, Infrared Photography is a vastly different art form than Color photography and will require you to develop new skill sets.  The best comparison would be a talented oil painter who decides to try watercolor painting; they both require a paintbrush, but that’s where the similarities end.

We have developed an intensive 3-day workshop to help you “hit the ground running” with your Infrared art.

During your 3-day workshop, you will spend one-day receiving hands-on training in Infrared image capture techniques, and two days on how to properly process your IR images.

We will start each day t 9:00 am.  There will be a lunch break, and we will wrap up each day at approximately 5:00 pm.

During our two days of shooting we will discuss:

  • How to visualize your image for Infrared
  • The importance of in Camera White Balance and setting a Custom White Balance
  • Developing a structured plan for capturing each image
  •  Bracketing, and how it relates to Infrared image capture
  • Proper use of f-stop & shutter speed to create different looks
  • How ISO relates to Infrared
  • Infrared Depth of field
  • Introduction to Infrared High Dynamic Range Photography
  • Working with challenging lighting scenarios
  • Making the most of natural light

For one day of the workshop, we will visit several locations to capture different types of Infrared images.

On Day Three will focus our attention on how to properly process your Infrared images.

During this session we will discuss:

  • How to best convert your RAW files
  • Utilizing the RAW editor for your camera
  • Jpeg or Tiff. . .  8 bit, 16 bit?  Which is better?
  • How to visualize your image as a 3D construct
  • How to take your image apart to maximize the effect
  • Utilizing Filters like the NIK Collection and Filter Forge
  • Working with layers and layer masks
  • The little tricks to make your images pop
  • Note: We will work in Photoshop, not Lightroom.

What to Bring:

  • Digital Camera
  • Tripod (not required, but helpful)
  • Memory cards
  • Extra camera battery
  • Laptop computer
  • Walking shoes
  • A positive attitude

I loved this workshop! Lucky enough to have a bunch of great people to do the workshop with which was really nice. I had the least amount of experience (several were professional photographers) but I never felt out of place. St Louis has some absolutely beautiful parks and landmarks. Dan was knowledgeable, but also fun which made the days go by too quickly. I would really recommend this workshop!

The St. Louis workshop is superb. Dan is an excellent teacher who provides individual hands-on instruction in the field during the shooting portion of the course. Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished photographer Dan unselfishly shares his knowledge by giving tips and instruction in an encouraging and constructive manner. During the processing part of the workshop he guides participants step by step from raw format to a completed infrared image. Dan’s approach is to foster and inspire long-term growth in a fun supportive environment. If learning to shoot and process infrared images is your goal, this is the workshop for you.

Outstanding. After LifePixel converted my Nikon D800E camera, my very first infrared images were shot at this workshop. I came into this with virtually no knowledge or experience and left with a solid foundation on capturing and processing these fascinating and intriguing images. Sure I have a lot more to learn, but Dan was excellent in providing a personalized “hands-on” walk-through of each step necessary to produce an image to be proud of both in the field and in post-production. The depth of his knowledge is remarkable and he is an excellent instructor notwithstanding his rather sardonic sense of humor. Other participants were at different levels of expertise with infrared photography, but from the rank beginner to the more accomplished photographer, this workshop has a lot to offer. Highly recommended.
